Sell my damaged car for scrap, collected free
You can sell a damaged car to us for scrap: we collect it for free from wherever it is, so it never has to be driven, and pay you by bank transfer on the day we collect. A scrap price is worked out from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and the parts that can be reused, so accident damage, rust or a missing part still leaves the car with a value.
To sell an accident damaged car to us, you do not need to repair it or move it first. We are a fully licensed scrap metal dealer, and a damaged car that is scrapped goes to an authorised treatment facility, which gives you a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days.
Three steps to scrap a damaged car
Tell us about the car
Send us the registration and postcode, and we come back to you with a price.
We collect it from wherever it is
We agree a time between 6am and 10pm, every day of the week, and collect the car where it stands, so a car that is not safe to drive stays off the road.
You are paid on the day
We check your photo ID and pay you by bank transfer on the day, and you get the Certificate of Destruction within 7 days.
What to have ready
Have photo ID ready, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, and a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if the ID does not show your address. Have the V5C logbook if you have it, and keep its yellow slip. If you kept a category S car, DVLA records its category in the log book.
Sell my broken car: Cat S and Cat N write-offs
You can sell a Cat S or Cat N car for scrap if you kept it after the insurance claim, because the insurer sells the car back to you when you choose to keep it. A category N car has non-structural damage and a category S car has structural damage, and both can be used again once they are repaired to a roadworthy condition. To keep a category S car, you send the complete log book to the insurer and apply for a free duplicate on form V62, while with a category N car you keep the log book. Compare the repair bill with our scrap price before you decide.
If the car is still with your insurer, the insurer will usually deal with getting it scrapped for you. We buy damaged cars that are yours to sell: one the insurer has sold back to you, or one that was never part of a claim.
What you get when you sell a damaged car for scrap
Most scrap cars fetch between about £150 and £300, with the average car around £220 to £250. A damaged car is priced by the same method as other scrap cars. Damage to the parts that can be reused, or a missing catalytic converter, lowers the figure, while the paintwork matters less, because the price reflects the weight and what can be reused.
Damaged car questions answered
Can I sell a written-off car?
Yes, if the insurer sold it back to you after the claim, which is what happens when you keep a category N or S car. A category A or B write-off cannot be repaired: with category A the entire vehicle has to be crushed, and with category B the body shell has to be crushed but other parts can be salvaged. Your insurer usually arranges this for you.
Where can I sell my damaged car near me?
You can sell it where it stands: we collect it for free from wherever it is in the areas we cover, between 6am and 10pm every day, at a time agreed with you.
Can I sell my damaged car for cash?
No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.
Will I get a Certificate of Destruction for a damaged car?
Yes, once it is scrapped: the treatment facility issues it within 7 days. There is no certificate if the facility decides to repair and sell the car instead of scrapping it.
