Scrap car buyers for cars and vans

  • Scrap my van

Scrapping my van explains what a van fetches and how we collect it: we take vans as well as cars.

  • Sell a non-running car

You can sell a non-running car to us: a car that will not start or cannot be driven still has a value, and we collect it.

  • Sell a damaged car

Sell my broken car covers a car damaged in an accident or too costly to repair: it still has a scrap value.

  • Sell an MOT failure car

MOT failure cars are worth a price before you pay for repairs that cost more than the car is worth.

  • Scrap a car without a V5

Scrapping a car without a V5 logbook is still possible once we have checked your photo ID.

  • Sell business and fleet vehicles

We take company cars and vans and pay by bank transfer.

Car scrap value: what sets the price

What a car fetches for scrap is made up of its weight at the current metal rate, its catalytic converter and any parts that can be reused.

Steel is only about a third of what most cars fetch, so your price moves far less than the metal headlines suggest. A car with its catalytic converter fitted and a complete engine and gearbox pays more than one without them.

Scrap cars in West Bromwich

West Bromwich's cars

Around 103,000 people live here, in about 39,300 households, and we collect scrap cars from every part of it. Around 145,000 cars were licensed across Sandwell, the borough it sits in, at the end of June 2026.

More than half of them (56%) were first registered in 2016 or earlier, against 48% across the UK, and around 32,000 (22%) in 2011 or earlier, so they are now 15 years old or more, close to the age at which the average car in Britain is scrapped. Whatever the age of yours, we collect it for free.

Scrapping an untaxed or abandoned car

A car left untaxed or abandoned on a local street can cost you money, and scrapping it is the simplest way out.

Untaxed vehicles on the road
It is an offence to use or keep on a public highway (this includes council-owned car parks) a motor vehicle (registered in the UK) without a valid current vehicle licence (Road Tax).
Abandoned vehicles
Sandwell Council treats a vehicle as possibly abandoned when it has not moved for a month or more and is not being used, is burnt out or badly damaged, or has a number plate missing, and a report must say why the vehicle is thought to be abandoned.
Abandoning a vehicle
Abandoning a vehicle is a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of a fine of £2,500 or three months imprisonment, or both.
Charges for an abandoned vehicle
The owner of an abandoned vehicle also pays a £200 fixed penalty to the council, a £200 release fee and £21 a day storage for up to 21 days.

Scrapping it with us costs nothing and takes one call: we collect it, pay you on the day, and the Certificate of Destruction tells DVLA the car has gone.

When to scrap a car

The right time to scrap a car is when the repair bill is bigger than the car's value, or when the car can no longer be driven legally. That usually means an MOT failure with a long list of work, a fault that stops it starting and is not worth fixing, or an insurance write-off.

Categories A and B are the write-offs that cannot be repaired. With category A the entire car is crushed, with category B the shell is crushed and other parts can be saved, and the insurer will usually deal with getting either one scrapped. Categories N and S can go back on the road once they are repaired.

Wherever the car is, give us its registration and the postcode for a free quote.

Car scrap yards, and why we come to you

Scrap cars go to licensed scrap yards, called authorised treatment facilities, and there are 120 within 10 miles of central West Bromwich, the nearest 0.7 miles from the middle of the B70 postcode district.

A car at the end of its life seldom makes the trip to a yard under its own power, and moving it any other way costs money. That is why we bring the truck to you and take the car away for free.

What scrap car dealers do with your car

Your car goes to an authorised treatment facility. There it is drained of fuel, oil and fluids, stripped of the parts worth selling on, and what is left is crushed and recycled.

The Certificate of Destruction at the end tells DVLA the car no longer exists, and it is the paper that shows you are no longer responsible for it.

  1. Collected and taken to the facility

  2. Fuel, oil and other fluids drained

  3. Parts that can be reused taken off

  4. Shell crushed and the metal recycled

Your questions answered

Do you collect scrap cars in West Bromwich?

Yes. A scrap car in West Bromwich gets the same free collection, 6am to 10pm every day, as a scrap car in Birmingham.

Which West Bromwich postcodes do you cover?

We cover West Bromwich's three postcode districts: B70 (Harvills Hawthorn and Greets Green), B71 (Hateley Heath and Charlemont) and B43 (Great Barr and Hamstead). Give us the full postcode or share your location pin when you call.

How far is West Bromwich from your base?

About 7 miles, around 27 minutes by road via the A457.

What happens when you scrap a car in West Bromwich?

We collect it for free. We agree a time with you and collect the car from wherever it is, running or not. We check your photo ID and pay you by bank transfer on the day, and you get your Certificate of Destruction within 7 days. By law the car must go to a licensed scrap yard, an authorised treatment facility, and there are 120 within 10 miles of the centre.

Who buys scrap cars in West Bromwich?

We do: Rapid Scrap My Car Birmingham is a licensed scrap metal dealer buying cars and vans across your area and the towns around it. Any licensed dealer has to check your ID, pay by bank transfer or cheque and use an authorised treatment facility, which is how you tell a real buyer from the rest.

What documents do I need to scrap my car in West Bromwich?

You need photo ID, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if your ID does not show your address, and the V5C logbook if you have it. The law makes every dealer check who they are buying from, so there is no way round the ID. Keep the yellow slip from the V5C and tell DVLA the car has been scrapped, or you can be fined £1,000. Any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.

Can I scrap my car if I still owe finance?

No, not without the lender's permission while the car is on hire purchase or conditional sale. Ask them for permission, or for a settlement figure and pay it to clear the agreement, and then you can scrap the car like any other.

Can I scrap my car without a registration document?

Yes. A Certificate of Destruction can be issued without a V5C, so the missing logbook does not stop the car being scrapped. Have photo ID and any paperwork that links you to the car ready, and we will tell you what else is needed. Then write to DVLA to tell them it has gone for scrap.

Does my car have to be free from damage?

No. Accident damage, rust, a missing part or a car that has been sitting for years all still scrap. The price reflects the weight and what can be reused, not the paintwork.

Can I scrap my car for cash in West Bromwich?

No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.

Does it matter how much service history my car has?

No. A scrap price comes from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and its reusable parts, not from the stamps in the book. The only time history matters is if the car is good enough to sell rather than scrap.

Do I need to provide the keys for my car?

No. Hand them to the driver if you have them, and if they are lost, tell us when you book and we still collect the car.
