Sell my MOT failure car before paying for repairs
You can sell an MOT failure car to us for scrap and get a price before you pay for the work: we collect it for free from wherever it is and pay you by bank transfer on the day we collect. Because we collect the car, it does not need to be driven, which matters when the test found a dangerous problem. A scrap price tells you what the car is worth to us before you decide on repairs.
We are a fully licensed scrap metal dealer, and we buy cars that failed their MOT for scrap, running or not. A car that is scrapped goes to an authorised treatment facility, which gives you a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days.
Your car failed its MOT: what now
When a car fails its MOT, the deciding figure is the repair bill against what the car is worth. A car fails when the test lists a "dangerous" or "major" problem, and you might not be allowed to drive it until the problems are fixed. If the repairs would cost more than the car is worth, ask for a scrap price before you book the work.
The result is recorded in the MOT database, where you can check the car's MOT history online, and you can appeal the result if you think it is wrong. If you leave the car at the test centre for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free.
How to sell a car that failed its MOT
Tell us about the car
Send us the registration and postcode, and we come back to you with a scrap price.
We collect it, so you do not drive it
We agree a time between 6am and 10pm, every day of the week, and collect the car for scrap from wherever it is.
You get paid on the day
We check your photo ID and pay you by bank transfer on the day, and you get the Certificate of Destruction within 7 days of the car being scrapped.
What you need to scrap it
Have photo ID ready, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, and a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if the ID does not show your address. Have the V5C logbook if you have it, and keep its yellow slip, then tell DVLA the car has gone to a treatment facility, or you can be fined £1,000.
What an MOT failure car fetches for scrap
Most scrap cars fetch between about £150 and £300, with the average car around £220 to £250. A car that failed its MOT is priced the same way, on its weight, its catalytic converter and its reusable parts.
Questions about scrapping an MOT failure car
Can I still drive my car after it fails its MOT?
Yes, if your current MOT is still valid and the test listed no "dangerous" problem. Otherwise you need to get it repaired before you can drive it, and a car whose MOT has run out may only be driven to a pre-arranged MOT test or to or from somewhere to be repaired. Even then it must meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times, and driving a car that failed because of a dangerous problem can mean a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban and 3 penalty points. We collect the car for scrap, so it does not need to be driven to us.
Can I scrap my car with no MOT?
Yes. Scrapping a car does not need an MOT: the car goes to a treatment facility to be scrapped, you give it the V5C and keep the yellow slip, then you tell DVLA. We collect the car from wherever it is, so it never has to be driven on the road.
Where can I sell an MOT failure car near me?
You can sell it where it stands: we collect it for free from wherever it is in the areas we cover, between 6am and 10pm every day, at a time agreed with you.
Do I get my road tax back?
Yes, for the full months left. Once DVLA knows the car has been scrapped, a refund for the full months of tax left is sent automatically to the name and address on the log book, so contact DVLA if it has not arrived after 8 weeks.
