Car scrap value: what sets the price
What a car fetches for scrap is made up of its weight at the current metal rate, its catalytic converter and any parts that can be reused.
Steel is only about a third of what most cars fetch, so your price moves far less than the metal headlines suggest. A car with its catalytic converter fitted and a complete engine and gearbox pays more than one without them.

Scrap cars in Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton's cars
Around 234,000 people live here, in about 93,400 households, and we collect scrap cars from every part of it. Around 121,000 cars were licensed here at the end of June 2026, about 1.3 for every household.
More than half of them (55%) were first registered in 2016 or earlier, against 48% across the UK, and around 26,000 (22%) in 2011 or earlier, so they are now 15 years old or more, close to the age at which the average car in Britain is scrapped. Whatever the age of yours, we collect it for free.
The most scrapped makes
The makes most often scrapped here are Vauxhall, Ford, Volkswagen, Peugeot and Renault. Around one in six is a Vauxhall and one in seven a Ford. We take every make and model.
Scrapping an untaxed or abandoned car
A car left untaxed, on SORN or abandoned on a local street can cost you money, and scrapping it is the simplest way out.
- Untaxed vehicles
- The DVLA is the only authority with the powers to remove untaxed vehicles from the public highway.
- SORN vehicles
- A vehicle on SORN should not be left on the public road, and the DVLA is the only authority with the powers to remove it.
- Abandoned vehicles
- A vehicle may be abandoned if several of these apply: it is in a very poor condition (burned out, significantly damaged, flat tyres or visible mould inside); it has been stationary for a long time (months) and is not being used; the owner is unknown; or its number plates are missing.
- Fines for abandoning a vehicle
- Abandoning a vehicle is a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of a fine of £2,500 or three months' imprisonment, or both.
- Charges for removal
- The owner of an abandoned vehicle is also liable for the council's costs: £192 for removal and £26 per day for storage, up to a maximum of 40 days.
Scrapping it with us costs nothing and takes one call: we collect it, pay you on the day, and the Certificate of Destruction tells DVLA the car has gone.
When to scrap a car
It is time to scrap a car when the repairs it needs would cost more than the car is worth, or when it can no longer go on the road legally. Most cars reach that point through a failed MOT and a long repair list, a breakdown that is not worth fixing, or an insurer writing them off.
A write-off in category A or B can never be repaired: a category A car is crushed whole, a category B car has its body shell crushed while other parts can be salvaged, and the insurer usually arranges the scrapping. A category N or S car can be repaired and driven again, so scrapping one is your choice.
When your car gets there, send us its registration and the postcode where it is parked, and we will price it for free.

Car scrap yards, and why we come to you
Scrap cars go to licensed scrap yards, called authorised treatment facilities, and there are 83 within 10 miles of central Wolverhampton, the nearest 0.2 miles from the middle of the WV1 postcode district.
Taking a scrap car to a yard yourself usually means paying for a tow or a trailer, because a car at the end of its life is rarely fit or legal to drive. We bring our truck to the car instead, and collect it for free.

What scrap car dealers do with your car
A car we collect goes to an authorised treatment facility, where its fuel, oil and other fluids are drained, the parts that can be reused are taken off, and the shell is crushed and recycled as metal.
Keep the Certificate of Destruction you get at the end: it proves the car is no longer yours if a fine or a tax bill for it ever turns up.

All fluids drained first
Good parts taken off to sell on
The rest crushed for recycling
Your questions answered
Do you collect scrap cars in Wolverhampton?
Yes. Wolverhampton is part of our scrap car Birmingham service, with free collection 6am to 10pm every day.
Which Wolverhampton postcodes do you cover?
We cover Wolverhampton's eight postcode districts: WV1 (Moseley Village and Monmore Green), WV3 (Finchfield and Bradmore), WV4 (Penn and Spring Hill), WV2 (Rough Hills and Goldthorn Hill), WV6 (Tettenhall and Tettenhall Wood), WV9 (Pendeford), WV10 (Oxley and Bushbury) and WV11 (Wednesfield and Ashmore Park). Give us the full postcode or share your location pin when you call.
How far is Wolverhampton from your base?
About 17 miles, around 37 minutes by road via the M6.
How much do you get for scrapping a car in Wolverhampton?
About £290 on average. These figures put a small car at about £225, a medium car at about £295, a large car at about £365 and an SUV at about £485. The exact price depends on your car's make, weight and parts, and we give you a free quote.
Who buys scrap cars in Wolverhampton?
We do: Rapid Scrap My Car Birmingham is a licensed scrap metal dealer buying cars and vans across your area and the towns around it. Any licensed dealer has to check your ID, pay by bank transfer or cheque and use an authorised treatment facility, which is how you tell a real buyer from the rest.
What documents do I need to scrap my car in Wolverhampton?
You need photo ID, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if your ID does not show your address, and the V5C logbook if you have it. The law makes every dealer check who they are buying from, so there is no way round the ID. Keep the yellow slip from the V5C and tell DVLA the car has been scrapped, or you can be fined £1,000. Any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.
Can I scrap my car if I still owe finance?
No, not without the lender's permission while the car is on hire purchase or conditional sale. Ask them for permission, or for a settlement figure and pay it to clear the agreement, and then you can scrap the car like any other.
Can I scrap my car without a registration document?
Yes. A Certificate of Destruction can be issued without a V5C, so the missing logbook does not stop the car being scrapped. Have photo ID and any paperwork that links you to the car ready, and we will tell you what else is needed. Then write to DVLA to tell them it has gone for scrap.
Does my car have to be free from damage?
No. Accident damage, rust, a missing part or a car that has been sitting for years all still scrap. The price reflects the weight and what can be reused, not the paintwork.
Can I scrap my car for cash in Wolverhampton?
No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.
Does it matter how much service history my car has?
No. A scrap price comes from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and its reusable parts, not from the stamps in the book. The only time history matters is if the car is good enough to sell rather than scrap.
Do I need to provide the keys for my car?
No. Hand them to the driver if you have them, and if they are lost, tell us when you book and we still collect the car.
