Sell my non-running car without moving it
You can sell a car that will not start to us for scrap without moving it: we collect it for free from wherever it is and pay you by bank transfer on the day we collect. A scrap price is worked out from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and the parts that can be reused, so the car still has a value.
We are a fully licensed scrap metal dealer. We still collect a car with no keys, so tell us when you book if they are lost, and a car with a flat battery or a failed engine is collected the same way. A car that is scrapped goes to an authorised treatment facility, which gives you a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days, and it is your proof that you have handed the car over.
How to sell a non-running car
Tell us about the car
Send us the registration and postcode, and we come back to you with a price.
We collect it where it stands
We agree a time between 6am and 10pm, every day of the week, and collect the car from wherever it is, so it never has to be started or driven.
You get paid by bank transfer
We check your photo ID and pay you by bank transfer on the day, and you get the Certificate of Destruction within 7 days.
What to have ready when we collect
Have photo ID ready, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, and a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if the ID does not show your address. Have the V5C logbook if you have it, and keep its yellow slip. Leave the engine, gearbox, bodywork and wheels on the car, because a treatment facility can charge a fee if essential parts like these have been removed before it is scrapped.
Tax, insurance and SORN while the car waits
A car that does not run still has to be taxed and covered by insurance unless it has a SORN, and a car with a SORN must be kept off a public road. A garage, a drive or private land all count as off the road, and without a SORN you must tax and insure the car, or you are automatically fined £80. Making a SORN brings a refund of the full months of tax left, and you must make one if you want to break the car down for parts before it is scrapped.
How much a non-running car is worth
Most scrap cars fetch between about £150 and £300, and a non-runner is priced by the same method as one that runs. Quotes tend to run higher than the prices finally paid, so judge a buyer on what it pays. What lowers a figure is missing metal and parts, such as a removed catalytic converter or an engine or gearbox that has been taken out.
Non-running car questions answered
Can you sell a non-running car?
Yes. A car that will not start still has a scrap value, because the price is worked out from its weight, metal and parts, and because we collect it, it does not need to be driven to us or towed anywhere by you.
Where is the best place to sell a non-running car near me?
The best place is a licensed scrap metal dealer that collects the car, pays by bank transfer and has it scrapped at an authorised treatment facility. We collect from wherever the car is in the areas we cover, between 6am and 10pm every day, and pay by bank transfer, and a car that is scrapped must go to an authorised treatment facility.
Can I sell my non-running car for cash?
No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.
Do I need to cancel the SORN before the car is scrapped?
No. A SORN is cancelled automatically when you scrap the vehicle. You still tell DVLA that the car has been scrapped, or you can be fined £1,000.
