Car scrap value: what sets the price
What a car fetches for scrap is made up of its weight at the current metal rate, its catalytic converter and any parts that can be reused.
Steel is only about a third of what most cars fetch, so your price moves far less than the metal headlines suggest. A car with its catalytic converter fitted and a complete engine and gearbox pays more than one without them.

Scrap cars in Brierley Hill
Brierley Hill's cars
Around 32,300 people live here, in about 13,900 households, and we collect scrap cars from every part of it. Around 165,000 cars were licensed across Dudley, the borough it sits in, at the end of June 2026.
More than half of them (52%) were first registered in 2016 or earlier, against 48% across the UK, and around 34,000 (21%) in 2011 or earlier, so they are now 15 years old or more, close to the age at which the average car in Britain is scrapped. Whatever the age of yours, we collect it for free.
Scrapping an untaxed or abandoned car
A car left untaxed or abandoned on a local street can cost you money, and scrapping it is the simplest way out.
- Untaxed vehicles
- It is an offence to use or keep on the public road a motor vehicle (registered in the UK) without a valid current vehicle licence (road tax).
- Abandoned vehicles
- A vehicle may be abandoned if one or more of these applies: it has been stationary for a long time (weeks or months) and is not being used; it is burned out, significantly damaged or in a poor condition such as with flat tyres; it is untaxed and has no current MOT; or it has number plates missing.
- Abandoned vehicles: notice before removal
- Dudley Council visits the location of an abandoned vehicle within five working days of being notified. If the vehicle is of low value, a 24 hour notice is attached to it and, if it remains unclaimed when the notice expires, it is removed for destruction. A vehicle of value may be taken into storage instead, with a seven day notice served on the registered keeper.
- Fines for abandoning a vehicle
- Abandoning a vehicle is a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty on conviction of £2,500, three months' imprisonment, or both. A Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 may also apply.
- Charges for removal
- Owners of abandoned vehicles that have been removed are liable for the costs, which are set in law. For an abandoned car these are, for example, £150 for removal, £20 per day for storage and a £75 disposal fee.
Scrapping it with us costs nothing and takes one call: we collect it, pay you on the day, and the Certificate of Destruction tells DVLA the car has gone.
When to scrap a car
Scrap a car once the work it needs would cost more than it is worth, or once it can no longer be driven on the road legally. The usual reasons are a failed MOT with more work than the car is worth, a car that will no longer start, and an insurance write-off.
If your insurer writes the car off in category A or B, it cannot be repaired, and the insurer will usually arrange for it to be scrapped: category A means the whole car is crushed, and category B means the body shell is crushed and other parts can be salvaged. Categories N and S can be repaired and put back on the road.
If yours has reached that point, put its registration and your postcode in the form for a free quote.

Car scrap yards, and why we come to you
Scrap cars go to licensed scrap yards, called authorised treatment facilities, and there are 81 within 10 miles of central Brierley Hill, the nearest 0.5 miles from the middle of the DY5 postcode district.
We come to you because a car that is ready for scrap often cannot be driven to a yard: it may have no MOT or tax, or not start at all. Our truck takes it from where it stands, and the collection costs you nothing.

What scrap car dealers do with your car
At the authorised treatment facility, a scrap car is drained of its fuel, oil and other fluids first, then stripped of its reusable parts, and finally crushed so that its metal can be recycled.
The Certificate of Destruction that comes out of it closes the car's record with DVLA and is your proof that you handed the car over.

Your questions answered
Do you collect scrap cars in Brierley Hill?
Yes. Brierley Hill is covered by our scrap my car Birmingham service, with free collection 6am to 10pm every day.
Which Brierley Hill postcodes do you cover?
We cover Brierley Hill's one postcode district: DY5 (Quarry Bank and Brockmoor). Give us the full postcode or share your location pin when you call.
How far is Brierley Hill from your base?
About 13 miles, around 43 minutes by road via the A457.
Where can I sell my car for scrap in Brierley Hill?
We collect it for free. We agree a time with you and collect the car from wherever it is, running or not. We check your photo ID and pay you by bank transfer on the day, and you get your Certificate of Destruction within 7 days. By law the car must go to a licensed scrap yard, an authorised treatment facility, and there are 81 within 10 miles of the centre.
Who buys scrap cars in Brierley Hill?
We do: Rapid Scrap My Car Birmingham is a licensed scrap metal dealer buying cars and vans across your area and the towns around it. Any licensed dealer has to check your ID, pay by bank transfer or cheque and use an authorised treatment facility, which is how you tell a real buyer from the rest.
What documents do I need to scrap my car in Brierley Hill?
You need photo ID, such as a photocard driving licence or a passport, a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months if your ID does not show your address, and the V5C logbook if you have it. The law makes every dealer check who they are buying from, so there is no way round the ID. Keep the yellow slip from the V5C and tell DVLA the car has been scrapped, or you can be fined £1,000. Any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.
Can I scrap my car if I still owe finance?
No, not without the lender's permission while the car is on hire purchase or conditional sale. Ask them for permission, or for a settlement figure and pay it to clear the agreement, and then you can scrap the car like any other.
Can I scrap my car without a registration document?
Yes. A Certificate of Destruction can be issued without a V5C, so the missing logbook does not stop the car being scrapped. Have photo ID and any paperwork that links you to the car ready, and we will tell you what else is needed. Then write to DVLA to tell them it has gone for scrap.
Does my car have to be free from damage?
No. Accident damage, rust, a missing part or a car that has been sitting for years all still scrap. The price reflects the weight and what can be reused, not the paintwork.
Can I scrap my car for cash in Brierley Hill?
No. Since 2013 no scrap dealer in England is allowed to pay cash for a car that is scrapped, so a dealer who pays cash for one is breaking the law. We pay by bank transfer on the day we collect.
Does it matter how much service history my car has?
No. A scrap price comes from the car's weight, its catalytic converter and its reusable parts, not from the stamps in the book. The only time history matters is if the car is good enough to sell rather than scrap.
Do I need to provide the keys for my car?
No. Hand them to the driver if you have them, and if they are lost, tell us when you book and we still collect the car.
